No, the Capitol Theater was close to the Wynberg Library. I think it was on Maynard Road near the intersection with Darroll’s Lane. It was around the corner from the Ster Constantia. And yes, I vividly remember that the Battle of Midway was screened at the Ster Constantia, and remember all the fuss about Sensaround.
MikeyB: The cinema you mention at the corner of Church Street and Meynard Road is the Capitol Cinema. (It has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
I stand under correction, but the address was not the corner of Main Road and Riverstone. The cinema stood further down Main Road, just after the corner of Church Street. I remember seeing The Battle of Midway (aka Midway) where this cinema had the “Sensaround” installation. The opening sequence is a bomber taking off from an aircraft carrier resulting in incredible base and rumbling effects. It was magnificent. I saw plenty of movies here in my youth. I note that there is no posting on this site for another cinema which was close by, the corner of Church Street and Maynard Road. Looking on Google maps, the building is still instact. It was a single screen, probably holding 500 seats. It had a balcony, I recall seeing the Disney pic The Apple Dumpling Gang there. Does anyone recall the name of this theatre?
The Google map address has been corrected. Please feel free to set the Google streetview to point to the correct location.
Wait a minute, 34 Main Road maps to where I remember it but the street view and the map being showed on the website is too far south.
I am 80 certain that the Ster Constantia was not where the little Google Map (on the right side) shows it. I do not think it was that far south down Main Road, Wynberg. I think it was further north, near Riverstone Road. On the Google Map it shows the location as being just a tiny bit south of Langley Road.
