Cosy Theatre

According to Jim Sleeper’s “Great Movies Shot in Orange County", the Cosy Theatre opened as the Orpheum Theatre in May of 1904. After being closed for an undetermined time, it reopened on November 27, 1905. It was described in the Santa Ana Evening Blade as “the cozy little house that has been dark so long". Managed by E.O. Phelps and Fred Ballim, it was also a vaudeville house.

Newspaper advertisements show that on December 4, 1905, the Orpheum Theatre played probably the first picture of any significance in Santa Ana. It was “The Great Train Robbery". The Internet Movie Data Base lists ‘Train Robbery’ as a 35mm film, 11 minutes in length. The theatre was still in the 1908-1909 city directory as the Orpheum Theatre but in 1909 it became the Empire Theatre and finally the Cosy Theatre before closing in 1914.
