Carousel 4

The Central City 4 listings first appeared in Los Angeles Times Independent Theatre Guide on May 9, 1973. Central City Mall had previously opened in 1972 when six square blocks of old San Bernardino was levelled for urban renewal. In 1991 it was renamed the Carousel Mall.

The Central City 4 was among six early AMC theaters in the Los Angeles area, which were listed in the Independent Theatre Guide. On Christmas 1974 all of the AMC theaters left the Independent listings and were consolidated in their own display advertisements with the heading ‘American Multi Cinema.’ The other five theaters were in Cerritos, La Habra, Orange, Puente Hills, and Rosemead.

In December of 1993, the Carousel 4 dropped out of AMC’s listings in the Times and presumably became an independent theater. By the summer of 1999, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise, the theater had just undergone a $75,000 refurbishment and was showing first run movies. After the opening of CinemaStar’s Empire 20 in December, the theater switched to a second-run program.

While being operated by Globe Theatres as a $1.75 discount house, it closed on May 17, 2001 and was later converted to office space.

It was announced in July 2022 that entire mall would be demolished.
