Here is a brief item about the Liberty Theatre from the November 1, 1924 issue of Moving Picture World:
An April 20, 2018 article in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader said that the Liberty Theatre opened on May 10, 1919. A projection booth fire on February 1st, 1920 closed the house until March 13 while repairs were made. Sawyer’s ten-year lease on the building ended in 1929, and it was not renewed, as the Liberty had closed in 1928, though the article doesn’t give a date for that event. My grandfather, Charles Sawyer owned this theater. This is recorded in the 1926 Sioux Falls Classified Business Directory. It was a silent theater at the time. The crash of 1929 forced him to close.
First ad: June 25th, 1919 in the photo section. This theatre may have been open before, but it place no ads before.
