The City of Wheeler says that the theater - although not in operation cinematically - is very much in use as a community hall or community center as of the mid 2020s. So “formerly abandoned” may be more appropriate.

Owners Leo and Laura Guthrie (and Son, “Corky” from 1958 forward replacing the late Leo) operated the Rogue from 1930 to 1979. They also built the Mustang Drive-In operating in Wheeling seasonally from 1952 to 1979.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates looking at a streetview of downtown and getting state highway or county road designations.

One of Google Maps' less charming features is calling roads by numbers that hardly anyone uses. Real address here is 408 South Main Street.

I remember seeing that Entertainment Tonight story. Very interesting.

The address is gibberish. This is like saying the address is Interstate. A Farm to Market Road always has a number (FM 1960, for instance). In addition, this must have an actual street name when it runs through town.

I’m not really sure why whoever posted this said it closed in the 50’s. It was closed around 1984. A local preacher started a campaign to have it shut down for showing r rated movies. If I remember correctly he squawked so much and him and his congregation harassed patrons to the point where sales declined so much that the owner was eventually forced to shut down from lack of business. They even did a story about the whole thing on entertainment tonight and were interviewing kids at the local school.
