The two-screen Coalinga Cinemas, developed by John Roush, opened in July of 1990. It was noted in the Fresno Bee that Coalinga had been without a theater since an earthquake destroyed the old State Theatre in 1983. Reel Time Entertainment has operated the theater in the last few years.
Now, Oakhurst, California residents, Matt Sconce and Keith Walker, have started Movies Heroes, which may save small-town theaters such as the Coalinga Cinema. The Business Journal notes that by using a special card, members can see unlimited movies in Coalinga for $16.95 a month or couples for $34.95. A family plan is also available. Participating California theaters in the Yosemite Theatres chain are in Avenal, Oakhurst, Coalinga, and Red Bluff. The Coalinga Theater was closed on January 15, 2026.
