The Lincoln Theatre, seating around 300, opened in 1912 on South State Street, not far from the larger Vendome Theatre. In addition to movies, the Lincoln Theatre featured live entertainment, including jazz performances during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
The theatre and most of its surrounding neighbors were demolished in the late-1940’s to make way for Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Main Campus. The great Chicago-based architect also headed the university’s architecture department from 1938-1958.

A March 17, 1956, Boxoffice article about long-time Chicago theater operator Nathan Joseph said that he opened the Lincoln Theatre, at 31st and State streets, in 1912. At the time the article was published, Joseph was operating the States and Owl theaters.
