The Magick Lantern was originally opened as a sole proprietor operated movie theater in 2013 about two years ago in Point Richmond. Its success was well received by the public, but was not profitable as a one-man operation. Indeed John is correct that group of those in the community has taken over and established a non-profit business structure.

New Mission Focus: The Magick Lantern’s primary mission is to provide a cultural alternative to the commercial film experience, to celebrate and promote the artistic elements of the medium, to nurture and promote the art of filmmaking itself, and to provide education and discussion of the film’s story and how those stories relate to our lives.

The group is busy in fund-raising mode currently. If you have any knowledge of groups that provide funds for art house movie theaters, please leave info at their website.

The beginning of 2015 finds the future of the Magick Lantern uncertain. The previous owner has apparently removed the seats, the tiered platform that supported the seats and the projection and sound equipment and left, possibly searching for a new location as was indicated on the old website when the theatre closed.

Meanwhile a grass roots group of determined people is attempting to raise funds to buy equipment, operate as a non-profit organization and re-open the theatre (possibly under a different name) in it’s original location.

Notice on Magick Lantern’s website announces theatre is now closed but “we anticipate re-opening very soon under different and better circumstances! If you’re on our email list, we’ll keep you posted on al the details”.

Recent news stories indicate that after about a year and a half of operation this cozy little cinema is struggling. That’s too bad because it’s the only place in the area to see non mainstream product. Classic films (DVD I suspect) are featured on Thursdays (with free admission!) and newer independent and foreign product Friday through Sundays.
