The Capitol Lichtspiele was built in 1926, opening in 1927 with 1,092 seats in orchestra and balcony levels. It was designed in an Art Deco style by architect Paul Darius, and the cinema was equipped with an organ. The original square proscenium has now been removed and the stage extended forward into the front orchestra section. Since closing as a cinema, it has been in use for many years for live performances and concerts.
