State Theater AKA Alhambra Theatre

Opened as the 450-seat Alhambra Theatre on September 15, 1913 with movies and vaudeville. It was closed in 1926. It reopened in 1927 as the State Theatre, which closed in 1928. It went into retail use, last used for organic tomato production.

It was taken over by the owner/operator of the adjacent West Theatre in 2023. Following restorations, it was reopened as the 60-seat Alhambra Theatre on May 1, 2025.

Became the State Theatre in 1928. No longer listed in 1930.

Here is a photo showing the Alhambra Theatre, Duluth, ca.1928, from the Minnesota Digital Library.

Two more photos of the Alhambra Theatre, these dated 1913:

The auditorium

The front

The text with these gives the address as 5715 Grand Avenue. I don’t know if that’s a mistake or if Central Avenue was actually called Grand Avenue in 1913.

Joe, there is a 5715 Grand Ave., but the building at 321 N. Central Ave. matches the former Alhambra Theatre building.

Whoever wrote the text with those photos must have confused the Alhambra with the Doric Theatre.
