The Nimitz Auto Movie was opened on October 25, 1963 with Doris Day in “The Thrill Of it All” & John Wayne in “Donovan’s Reef”. It was located near the the Fremont Dragstrip. A second screen was added in the mid-1960’s. This drive-in mostly showed exploitation and even adult films. Closed in the early-1980’s, office buildings were built on the site. Today a shopping center is on the site.

The dragstrip scenes in American Graffitti 2 were filmed at the Fremont Dragstrip down the street. Ironically, the drive-in was closed by then.
Update—A new shopping center is now on the drive-in site.

Approx. address for this drive-in was 44000 Christy St.
BTW, this was open past ‘73. My father worked at the GM plant across the highway (then known as Hwy 17).
From 1958 until 1983 Hwy 17 (from San Jose to Oakland) was also known as the Nimitz Freeway, hence the name of the drive in.
The address (at least for Google) is 5070 Brandin Ct, Fremont, CA. Today, there are a series of businesses on the property with no trace of the drive-in remaining. http://tinyurl.com/zd22vqn
This opened on October 25th, 1963. Grand opening ad in the photo section.
Why was the highway called Nimitz?
Hwy 17 (now Interstate 880) was named after Chester W Nimitz, chief of naval operations for the Pacific fleet and fleet Admiral.
Sorry Ken you’re WAY off!
As I prviously stated, the correct address is
4400 Christy St, Fremont CA 94538. Please update.
Brandin Court DID NOT EXIST when this was opened! It runs through the former drive in property.
FYI the Fremont Speedway is yet another Amazon Distribution Center! Costco and the new Century 16 theater are down the street in the Pacific Commons shopping center.
Again please update with the current address.
