Rembrandtplein Theater

Located on the Rembrandtplein in the centre of Amsterdam, adjacent to the Rembrandt Theater. The Rembrandtplein Theater was a large Art Deco style cinema which opened in the mid-1930’s. The façade had an unbroken mass of cream tiles, topped by the theater’s name in 1930’s style neon letters. Sadly, the Rembrandtplein Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1943.

A new Rembrandtplein Theater was built on the site which opened in August 1966 with Audrey Hepburn in “How to Steal a Million”. Seating was provided for 802-seats in orchestra and balcony levels. It was equipped to screen 70mm films. It became a twin screen cinema.It was closed in 1987. Today the building houses a nightclub named Escape.
