Previous Names: Monroe Cinema
In a suburb of Cardiff, at the junction of Albany Road and Wellfield Road, the Monroe Cinema opened in November 1988 with “A World Apart”, starring Barbara Hershey. This small cinema was situated above the shops which had been built on the site of the demolished Globe Cinema. It was owned and operated by Circle Cinemas, who also operated the Monico Cinema - and, apparently, who chose the name ‘Monroe’ not so much because of the celebrated actress, but because the name has six letters, as did ‘Monico’!
The Monroe Cinema was open in October 1998 (when my scanned photograph was taken). Sometime later it was operated by Chapter Arts centre as a student cinema and, more recently, as a Bollywood cinema. In 2008 it began use as a live music & comedy venue named The Globe. It now has 350 standing spaces divided between the former stalls and balcony levels.
