In Wickford, Essex, the Carlton Cinema was built by a local man, Walter French, and opened in 1937. It had a 23ft wide proscenium. By 1944 it was operated by Mayfair Circuit (Control) Ltd. By 1945 it was owned by Mr. B. E. Fortesque as part of his ‘Radion’ circuit and, by 1953, by Bentley Circuit (Management) Ltd.
The Carlton Cinema closed in the mid-1950’s when Woolworths took over the building and converted it into a store. They eventually demolished it in the early-1970’s to build a new store on the site.
