The Mancos Opera House was built in 1910. By the 1920’s, the Mancos Opera House was used as a movie theatre and was known as the Mancos Theatre. The Mancos Theatre is listed in the 1945 Film Daily Yearbook with 250 seats. The building is currently occupied by the Mancos Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Mancos Opera House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 (#87002183).

The address given for the opera house is 136 W. Grand Avenue which Google maps to 136 E. Grand Avenue.

Boxoffice, March 31, 1956: “MANCOS, COLO. – Philip M. Belt, formerly of Cortez, Colo., recently purchased the Mancos Theatre here.”

Boxoffice, April 21, 1956: “Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bauer have sold the Mancos Theatre to Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Belt of Cortez. … Mr. and Mrs. Bauer … started the business in 1949 in the new Bauer building which was built to replace the old Bauer Mercantile building, destroyed by fire in 1948.”

Deadlines kept slipping even then. Motion Picture Herald, Aug. 7, 1948: “Wayne Baur putting in 300-seat theatre, Mancos, Colo., opening about September 15.”

Boxoffice, Jan. 1, 1949: “Wayne Bauer is building a 300-seat theatre at Mancos, Colo., which he hopes to open January 16”
