Cinema Capitole

The historic Capitole was opened on 29th November 1928. It is currently the largest single screen cinema operating in Switzerland. The original seating capacity was 1,077, with 802 in the orchestra and 275 in the balcony.

In 2010 it was acquired by the City of Lausanne, and was given to the Cinematheque to use for their programming. It was closed in 2021 to enable a complete renovation costing $25.3 million and to create a 2nd screen in the basement. The main original auditorium now has 730-seats (578 in the orchestra and 152 in the balcony) and is equipped to screen 4K digital, 16mm, 35mm and is the only screen in the country able to screen 70mm films. The new 2nd screen in the basement has 140-seats. It reopened on 24th February 2024 screening a brand new 70mm print of Keir Dullea in “2001:A Space Odyssey” in the original auditorium and Pierre Richard in “Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noir”(The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe) in the new auditorium.

Lived in Lausanne in the early 80s…this was a great showplace with mostly Paramount/Universal/MGM programming…the old CIC later UIP circuit…The theatre was run by a distinguished older lady Lucienne Schegg about whome the documentary La Petite Dame du Capitole was made–/id_film/2146532586 Saw Reds and Victor Victoria here on long runs…What was also quite solid was that English language versions were shown Mondays and Tuesdays – you could set your watch by it
