The Starlite Drive-In opened March 18, 1949 with Tex Ritter in “Rolling Home to Texas” and Robert Mitchum in “Betrayed”. The car capacity was listed at 400 cars. It was initially operated by Anderson Theatres and finally by Malco Theatres. At one time Malco Theatres dominated the market in Owensboro. The drive-in closed on October 3, 1988 when the screen was burned by vandals.

A more accurate address (at least according to Google) is 2960 W. Parrish Ave, Owensboro, KY. The drive-in sat on the south side of the road.
Today, the property holds Kroger’s grocery store. However, you can still make out the faint edges and ramps of the drive-in both to the south and east sides of the store. http://tinyurl.com/jtfy4oy
This opened on March 18th, 1949 according to the grand opening ad that I posted in the photo section.
Were the vandals who set the screen on fire arrested by the police?
Yes, two 16-year-old boys that is. Both were charged with one count each of first-degree arson, third-degree burglary and second-degree wanton endangerment in connection of the October 3, 1988 burning of the Starlight’s screen. If they found guilty of all three charges, they would receive 30 years in prison. Unfortunately I cannot find the headline on both pleas.
