Was the Bijou later renamed the “Maine Theatre”? The Maine Theatre was also located on Water St. (street number not given) and was about the same size (400 seats), supposedly open by 1926. The Maine Theatre was operating as of May 1941 and was the subject of M-G-M Theatre Report, Card # 457, now in the archives of the Theatre Historical Society. The CinemaData Project has seperate listings for the Bijou and the Maine.
The Bijou Theatre and the Maine Theatre, both on Water Street, are treated as two different theaters in the CinemaData Project database. But it’s odd how the Bijou fades from the scene as the Maine Theatre enters the scene! It’s possible that the Bijou was renamed Maine Theatre, but I’m not sure of that. The CinemaTour list of theaters in Waterville has the Maine Theatre, but not the Bijou.
The Bijou theatre opened on April 16th, 1914 and reopened as Empire on OCtober 9th, 1931 and Maine on November 25th, 1935 and closed or stopped placing ads in 1948. Grand opening ads posted.
