The Riverside Drive-In was opened on August 1, 1963 with Steve McQueen in “The Great Escape”. One source said the Riverside Drive-In parked 500 cars and another said 800. Either number made it a large drive-in in Macon. In looking at an aerial when it was open it looks as though the 800 could be right. The Riverside Drive-In was operated by the Georgia Theatre Company. The drive-in closed in January 1980.

The Riverside Drive-In was Macon’s newest, opening around 1962 with “The Great Escape”. It was owned by the Georgia Theater Company, this was and still is one of the nicest parts of Macon. Weekends were special here while in high school, the Riverside was were we would meet, we had certain rows we all parked on, what great times, GWTW!!
Nicest drive in setting I have ever been in. In the early 70’s we had to make the drive from school in Milledgeville to Macon for most of the first run movies. Sometimes there were more movies available than indoor screens and both the Riverside and Weis would get an occasional first run.
After my first visit to see a first run of Life And Times of Judge Roy Bean, I came back several times. They even ran triple features occasionally so I would make a night of it with a stop at Shanes Steak House on Riverside Drive, followed by a triple feature at the drive in and then on home to Atlanta for the weekend.
Oh to be young again.
The approximate address for this drive in was 3899 Arkwright Rd, Macon, GA 31210. River Place Drive is where the entrance was located.
Boxoffice, March 18, 1963: “MACON, GA. - This area will be enjoying a new drive-in theatre by early summer, according to James Herndon, city manager for Georgia Theatres. The 850-car theatre is under construction at Arkwright road and Riverside drive.”
