The Capitol Avenue Theatre opened on April 14, 1951 with Hedy Lamarr in “A Lady Without Passport” & Johnny Mack Brown in “Sheriff of Medicine Bow”. The Capitol Avenue Theatre had a short life closing on December 26, 1956 with Robert Taylor in “The Last Hunt”. This was an African American theatre. Their newspaper advertisements read ‘Baton Rouge’s most modern colored theatre, completely air conditioned for your comfort. Admission 9 cents to 35 cents’.

It was converted into a church which closed in 2010. The Capitol Avenue Theatre was demolished as a new church was built on the site.

Same theater? Boxoffice, Jan. 25, 1960: “J. G. Broggi … informed Boxoffice that the Capitol, Baton Rouge, one of his former accounts, was sold to the archdiocese, along with other property in the block, to be demolished and replaced by an all-Negro seminary with a large, landscaped campus.”

The Capitol Ave. Theatre opened in 1951. In April of 1956, it installed widescreen projection to present CinemaScope films. Its last ad was December 26, 1956 with “The Last Hunt.” It was old to the archdiocese which converted it into a church. It stood until 2010 and was demolished for a new St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church opening in 2011. It might help to change the address from 3912 Capitol Avenue to 3912 Gus Young Avenue as the street name changed confounding a subset of mapping systems.
