The King Drive-In opened on April 24, 1949 with Bud Abbott & Lous Costello in “Buck Privates”. It had a parking ramp that held 224 cars. It was operated by D. E. Gwynn of Eden Theatres, Leaksville, North Carolina. Porter Garrett McGee, known as ‘Fibber McGee’ purchased the King Drive-In in the mid-1950’s. He operated it with his first wife’s sister & husband (Mr & Mrs Harvey Hendrix) as co-owners and Mrs Hendrix as manager. It featured a stage for musical acts before show, which was common for drive-in’s in the 1950’s-1960’s. It was closed in mid-1974 due to lack of business and it was sold. It is now Sheetz Convenience Store.
