Roxy Theatre

The district of North Sydney is ‘the other end of the Harbour Bridge’, a small suburb that’s become a large corporate centre. The Roxy Theatre was built in the 1920’s by impresario H.C. McIntyre who offered an alternative to variety theatres in the city, such as the Tivoli Theatre. He showed films with elaborate stage acts from touring companies.

The Roxy Theatre was bought in 1941 by the Virgona family who operated the North Sydney Orpheum Theatre. Seating was reduced from 1,317 to 900 but the Roxy Theatre closed a few years later and was demolished in 1951.
