Regent Cinema

Located in Crowborough, East Sussex. The Regent Cinema was built for the Shipman & King circuit, and was the circuit’s third purpose built new cinema. It was designed by Hastings based architect Henry W. Coussens. As Mr. A.R. Shipman lived nearby, the cinema was slightly more superior to other Shipman & King cinemas.

The Regent Cinema was opened in November 1931. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.

Shipman & King closed the Regent Cinema in 1968 showing Dustin Hoffman in “The Graduate”. It was concerted into a supermarket. The building has since been converted into offices, which the foyer area is now a branch of Lloyds TSB Bank.

The Regent Cinema in Crowborough was closed for good in 1968, the last film to be shown being The Graduate. The building was refurbished and re-opened later the following year as a supermarket, Centramarket. A few years later it changed hands to International, during this period, apparently, the upper floor remained unchanged from its' cinema days.
