Oatley Theatre

Oatley is a suburb about 13 miles south of Sydney where the Georges River flows into Botany Bay. In 1942 the Fidden family built Oatley’s only movie theatre. Although small it could boast of a major architect in Aaron M. Bolot who had designed the Randwick Ritz Theatre.

It was named the Radio Theatre, after New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The interior had cream and brown walls with gold trim and deep red carpet. The opening show was “They Met In Bombay” starring Clark Gable, and the house was packed.

Later the Radio name was dropped and it became just the Oatley Theatre. In 1962 it was bought by the neighboring RSL Club and turned into a gym and activities center for the Youth Club.
