Built in downtown Honolulu as the Asahi Gekijo (Asahi Theater), where sumo and other athletic events were held, along with plays. It opened as the Roosevelt Theatre on September 28, 1934 and was operated by Franklin Theatres. It was taken over by Royal Theatres in 1938.

In 1959 it became one of Chinatown’s adult film venues and was renamed Rex Theatre on June 20, 1970, eventually shutting down as a theatre for good. The Hong Fa Market is now in its place.

Apparently this was the Oahu Theater as well (one of two different theaters called the Oahu), and ended up becoming the Rex.
