A sliver of the eastern side of the magnificent State Theatre’s basement became the State Newsreel Theatrette on 24th December 1931. Owners Greater Union saw the huge popularity of the “Fox Movietone” weekly newsreels, one with local content, one with international content. Using their feature production subsidiary, Cinesound, GU premiered the “Cinesound Review”.
Like most newsreel theatres, the State Newsreel Theaterette had a long, narrow auditorium with no effort made to reflect the architectural splendor of the mothership above.
When TV put the newsreels out of business, it began to run feature films and was known as State Theatre 2. After long periods of not being used, it was eventually converted to the Statement lounge and bar in 2009.
