Considering AMC doesn’t like having smaller theater this is good that they refurbished the sign. Thanks Ed Solero for the pic
Interesting that AMC would permit something to identify a theatre by name rather than just have the generic AMC. I wonder why.
Nice shot!
For what it’s worth, just posted a pic taken this evening, of the refurbished upright FANTASY sign
With the dissolution of regional clearance restrictions, most (if not all) of the features playing at the Fantasy are also playing at the nearby Lynbrook. So it’s a matter of taste, price and convenience.
I have a soft spot for the historic Fantasy but my movie buddy considers it a bit of a dump – the “itch,” if you will. (I miss the colorful vocabulary of yesteryear lol.)
But at least the itch had discounted prices to offset the subpar presentation, unlike the Fantasy whose ticket and concession prices you’d expect to find at a roadshow presentation house…
It’s in a busy location, lots of stuff going on and lots of foot traffic, particularly on weekends. Not sure if that translates into box office, but it’s either this multiplex or the Regal in Lynbrook for folks in RVC, Oceanside, Lynbrook, East Rock, Malverne, and Valley Stream. I know there’s the Malverne Cinemas, but that was small even as a single screener, and most of its programming caters to a more indie-minded crowd. So, if it’s not playing at Regal, people will go to the Fantasy.
I am surprised AMC is keeping this open. They don’t like small theaters
Just uploaded a few pics taken today. Scaffolding is starting to come down, and evidently the work done was to restore the vertical sign with new letters spelling out FANTASY, backlighting for the letters and the red neon highlights along the outer spine of the sign. Though, looks to me like one of the neon strips may be out, already!
In theatrical parlance, the correct word for that type of sign is “vertical,” with “upright” as an alternative.
I figure with the scaffolding built the way it is, perhaps the blade is going back up? I guess time will tell. They’d have to re-do the scaffolding to get to the part of the facade where the blade used to be, if they’re getting rid of it alltogether.
I was thinking about you, Ed, when I drove by yesterday and wondering what in the world is going on; the blade seems to be gone but it’s hard to get a good look through all the scaffolding wrappings, etc.
More construction scaffolding is up on the facade - and appears the blade has been stripped down to its frame. Three photos uploaded, and mislabeled - should be as of today 10/23, not 10/22.
I’m hoping they put the name back up on the blade, at least, after the repair work is complete.
And why in the world they ever take down those blade letters, this place sure looks like a dump compared to the new Regal a few blocks away
Uploaded a photo from February showing damage to the facade after a wind storm. There is actually a hole. I presume that the entire surface will be checked in addition to repairing the damage. But the scaffolding went up in February so they’re taking their own sweet time. Guess they want it done before the next hurricane.
Looks like workers are finally up on scaffolding doing something to the facade above the entrance. Too early to see exactly what that work entails, but I posted a photo, nonetheless.
Why even have Fantasy in the name when the word has been stripped from the building these past few years? Either the name will be going back up (doubtful) or their just fixing some defect and will shortly remove “Fantasy” from all future advertisements and listings.
I thought bland was the AMC signature; not even showing the name of the theatre. I was surprised when they left the vertical on the Shore.
Looks like more changes coming to the bland facade. Construction shedding is up above the entrance and sidewalk for the entire length of the building. The cinema is still open for business. Photos uploaded I took just today.
This was to reopen on August 28th, 1988 but was delayed a week. Two more ads posted.
Please update RKO to RKO Century Warner in previous operators, it was never a solo RKO owned, only as RKO Century.
Not sure if the name FANTASY on the blade had been removed back when I posted 12/30/2019, but it is gone now. Photo added.
When AMC did their exterior rebranding of the Shore 8 in Huntington they left the old Cineplex Odeon vertical but it now has AMC at the top and theaters vertically. See my photos on that site.
The facade has been shorn of all neon and marquee boards, and now sports the same bland, generic reddish AMC logo over the entrance, common to just about all AMC multiplexes these days.
The neon and the lettering have recently been removed from the vertical blade; I have not yet spoken to anyone so I don’t know its future plans.
