Cineplex, then an independent chain, opened the Cineplex Royal Centre in 1981 in the lower retail level of the Royal Centre Mall in downtown Vancouver. As was common with Cineplex theatres of the time (like the Eaton Centre in Toronto), this cinema complex contained ten tiny theatres with a seating total of 1,222. The largest theatre, Cinema Ten, seated 164 while the smallest, Cinema Six, seated 86. Throughout its years of operation, the Royal Centre screened art and independent films, following the format of the nearby Fine Arts Theatre and the Ridge Theatre.
With the merger of the Cineplex and Odeon chains into Cineplex Odeon in 1984, the theatre was renamed as the Royal Centre Cinemas. It closed in 1993 and was renovated for additional space for the Royal Bank.
