Sandpoint Cinema 4

The Cinema 4 West was located inside of a former bowling alley in downtown Sandpoint and opened on March 21, 1980. In 1993 it was taken over by Larry Blair who was also associated with the Magic Lantern in Spokane and the Post Falls Cinema. For a few years the Sandpoint Film Society sponsored movies at the cinema before moving to the Panida Theatre.

In October of 1996 the world premiere of “Navajo Blues,” a film by Joey Travolta, was held at the theater. The Spokane Spokesman-Review noted that the film was “low-budget” by Hollywood standards but much of the funding was local as was the musical score by Scott Haynes. “It’s a community-based show”, said movie backer Chuck Brewster, president of Brewster Financial Group. Proceeds of the event went to support the Panida Theatre.

It closed as the Sandpoint Cinema 4 on March 5, 2006 and was demolished later that year to make room for the Panhandle State Bank.

An article in the March 4, 1993 edition of the Bonner County Daily Bee reported that Larry Blair had just purchased the theater. It had opened in 1980 by a local couple and had changed hands a few times before.
