New San Juan Cinema

This theater opened in the late 1960’s and specialized in Mexican and Spanish films. Many of the "Cantinflas" movies and the old fashioned "Marisol" movies from Spain were shown here.

This theater was never too successful (its location in a crime ridden area and lack of parking space did not help things) and closed down in a few short years.

Later it was turned into a TV studio where a local producer Luis Vigoreaux would broadcast game shows. This experiment failed too and the building later caught fire and was torn down.

Wasn’t this theater oriiginally called the “F”, owned and operated by the Llamas family?
Happy New Year, Andres.

I remember the New San Juan showed Spanish-language films but later changed to X-rated. It may have been called the “F” when it first opened, but I do recall its having reopened under that name, either before or after serving as Luis Vigoreaux’s studio. The “F” in its (perhaps) second incarnation was an unsuccessful venture.

I think it was definitely the F, a Llamas theater. The New San Juan was operated by the owners of the Rex, the old Delicias, at Fernandez Juncos and Parque,

Bob J, I don’t know why you have this fixation with exact addresses and street numbers. Why don’t you buy a GPS or whatever that gadget is called? In NYC no one knows the street number of Radio City Music Hall, Macy’s or the Empire State Building and everyone, including non-English speaking visitors, know where they are. In PR, does anyone know the street number of Plaza las Americas on Roosevelt Avenue? Of Fortaleza or the Capitol in Old San Juan? Of course not, but everyone knows where they are. For buildings such as theaters, churches, landmarks, etc., if they tell you it is on X avenue or street between Y and Z streets, that is enough info to find them.

One Spanish-language film the New San Juan played in the 1960s was the spy spoof “Agente ‘0’ en New York” starring the late Puerto Rican comedian Adalberto Rodriguez (better known by his show-business name “Machuchal”).
