Picture House

Built adjacent to the Theatre Royal (on its right hand side). The Picture House was opened on 26th December 1912 with a seating capacity for 600. By the 1930’s this had been increased to 873 with the installation of a balcony.

It was taken over by the Newcastle based Essoldo Cinemas chain in October 1957. The Picture House was closed in June 1967, as part of a compulsory purchase order from the Council, and was demolished, together with the Theatre Royal and adjacent properties for a town centre redevelopment.

A press cutting says this was the first purpose built cinema in Huddersfield. The Piazza shops are on the site.

Does anybody have any recollection of the organ that was in the picture house?
