The Star Music Hall opened in Bristol in 1870. It was rebuilt in 1896 after a fire, opening as the Tivoli Theatre, designed by an architect named Hancock. It first showed motion pictures as part of its offerings on June 8 1896, becoming one the earliest theaters in England to do so. It was operated for many years by actor-turned-showman E.‘Teddy’ Leon who also operated Bristol’s Empire Theatre (as well as several dental clinics).
Its heyday as a cinema was during the period of 1912-1916. After that time, it was primarily used as a venue for live theatre and entertainment.
The Tivoli Theatre was demolished in 1952.
