Eastside Cinema

The Eastside Cinema opened on Christmas Day 1970 as the UA Cinema 1&2. The larger auditorium had 610 seats while the smaller one 242. The Spokane Daily Chronicle interviewed the first manager, John Heathcote, who was a veteran of the British stage as an actor and director. Before coming to Spokane he was a district manager for West Side Valley Theaters in San Francisco. Before that he spent five years in Canada as a manager for Odeon Theaters.

In December of 1984 the cinema came under the Sterling Recreation Organization (SRO) heading in the Chronicle advertisements, which included a name change to the Eastside Cinema. In December of 1986 the business news noted that Cineplex Odeon had purchased SRO for $45.5 million. After serving as a discount house since 1991, there was another change in 1992 when Act III Theatres became the operator.

After Act III, Regal Cinemas began operation in December of 1998 but they designated it as “underperforming,” and closed it on December 14, 2000. In 2003 the building became home to the Liferoads Church, which occasionally takes the theater back to its roots for free family movies and popcorn.

A short article about the Cinema 1&2, then under construction, appeared in the August 24, 1970, issue of Boxoffice. The project was designed by Gale Santocono, in conjunction with Spoakane architect William G. Fiedler.
