Onyx Theatre

Built in 1898 by William R. Koch. The Onyx Theatre was opened April 4, 1912 on the first floor of the building and was the first movie theatre to operate in Newport News without vaudeville in the program. It suffered damage from a fire in 1921, and never reopened. The space went into other uses as commercial space. The building was damaged by a violent storm in the 1950’s and the third floor was removed.

The two movies shown in the display ads in front of the theatre were released in 1921 per IMDB. Thus fire must have been in 1921 and theatre closed.
