Located in the small Derbyshire town of Glossop. The Empire Theatre was opened in April 1921 . It had a stage and four dressing rooms, and presented variety shows and films. It was taken over by the Provincial Cinematograph Theatres(PCT) chain in 1926. They were taken over by the Gaumont British Theatres chain in February 1929.
The Empire Theatre was closed by the Rank Organisation on 27th July 1963. It was converted into a supermarket, but this has since closed and the building demolished. A Kwik Save supermarket was built on the site, this later became an Ethel Austin clothing store and in 2013 a Poundstretcher supermarket now operates from the site.

Loved this theatre! I worked there in 1954 as a trainee Projectionist! …I was only 15-16yo then! great fun learning about the movie world. So sad it’s not there anymore.
The former manager of this theatre, Bill Geoghegan,(later of Odeon Bury and Odeon Barking) recently died at the age of 89. I well remember his stories of the winter of 62/3, wading through the snow to bank the previous days takings of about 3s/6d.
