Opened in September 10, 1890 with Hoyt’s “A Tin Soldier”, the Fort Payne Opera House was converted into a movie theater in the 1910’s. Seating was provided on three levels for 290, 160 and 12. The theater closed in 1935.
In 1969 it was purchased by Landmarks of DeKalb County, Inc., and was restored. The Fort Payne Opera House reopened to the public in 1970, hosting live events, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places that same year. It was damaged by a fire in 1981, but was repaired and reopened.

The July 22, 1916, issue of The Moving Picture World had this item datelined Fort Payne: “Miss Leona Thomason will expend $5,000 to remodel opera house for a moving picture theater.”
