Sherman Theater Goodland, KS 1989

The Sherman Theater opened for business on August 2, 1926 and was deemed an instant success.

A four column article in the Goodland News Republic, dated July 29, 1926, gives details on the theater’s decor, seating, curtains, refreshment stand, and copper drinking fountain, which was the focus of the lobby. The theater’s first feature, Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, starred a matinee idol of the day, Harry Langdon, and was, of course, a silent film.

Without warning in 1928, a disastrous fire almost consumed the Sherman Theatre. Undiscovered because of the early hour, the fire managed to burn through the back or east wall of the theatre, collapsing the wall and roof into the alley.

However, the theater was eventually restored and has had a successful run as a movie house. By 1941 through to at least 1950, it was operated by Commonwealth Amusement.

The Sherman Theatre in Goodland KS is a great theatre. As a kid in the 1970s, during the summer we could get in to the show for a minimal cost plus a comic strip from the newspaper. That would get you a hotdog, popcorn and drink. Prior to the show the staff would entertain the kids with contests, prizes and stories on the stage in front of the screen. It was great and the place was always packed. Pippi Longstocking was a favorite. I hope the theatre continues to hold memories for those still visit.

Is the false front still there? Next time I drive into western Kansas, I’ll have to check. Here’s the Sherman in 1989:

Will the Sherman make it to its 90th birthday next August? New photos in the pictures section.

Commonwealth Theatres operated this location until the 1990s, when I assume it was closed or let go by its new owners, United Artists Theaters.
