The Lyric Theatre was referred to in the Los Banos Enterprise on November 25, 2003 as opening on October 27, 1917. Pearl DeGregori, 91-years of age said her father Peter Genelly built the theater and she worked there for ten years starting at age nine.
Pearl related a story of the time Mickey Rooney visited Los Banos to promote a movie. The bottom line is she ended up attending a community dance with Rooney and became an instant celebrity. When she was 18 her father sold the theater and donated its $15,000 Wurlitzer to the church.
Gardner’s Plumbing, which occupied the building for many years, closed in 2004. The Lyric Theatre was listed in the Film Daily Yearbook of 1928-30 with 500 seats. After those years it was dropped from the FDY. The building still exists in downtown Los Banos.
