Located on Route 66 in the Apple Valley Shopping Center between Poughkeepsie and Lagrangeville. This was opened as a Jerry Lewis Cinema on October 4, 1972 with Marlon Brando in “The Godfather”. On September 25, 1973 it was renamed Cinema 55. In 1974 it began screening adult feature films. It then swayed back and forths over several years playing adult movies and regular movies. It played first run movies, then art house before slipping into adult porn. It was closed on September 29, 1985 with Don Ameche in “Cocoon”. It became a nightclub for a while.
Today, the lobby is in use as a Subway, while the auditorium has been split into a few businesses, including a Chinese restaurant.

For much of my youth this was a porno theatre that started showing THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW from the late 1970s thru the mid 1980s. I saw my first XXX movie “DIRTY BLONDES” here in 1983. Around 1984-1985 it was converted to a second run house showing commercial Hollywood movies. I seem to remember the place closing for good in the mid 1980s.
The ad in the photos section says the theatre was in “La Grange”. The ad is from 11/8/72
