Picturedrome

Located in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire at the corner of Barnby Gate and Sherwood Avenue. The Newark Skating Rink was opened on 28th October 1909. It was designed by architect R.W. Lockton of the architectural firm Sheppard & Lockton.

In July 1910, skating was replaced on three nights a week by variety shows. Animated pictures were screened from 12th September 1910 by the London Bioscope Co. and the building was re-named New Theatre.

In 1911, it was known as the New Theatre Picturedrome, presenting pictures and variety, and it closed in June 1911 for alterations to be carried out to convert into a full time cine-variety theatre. It re-opened as the Picturedrome.

The Picturdrome was closed on 1st June 1921 with “The Hundreth Chance”, and proposals were put forward to make alterations to comply with licencing regulations. It never re-opened and was converted into a warehouse. It has since been demolished.
