I’m glad to have a point of agreement with Jamey_monroe45. The drive-in was at 2858 Willamette St. There’s a trailhead at 2858 South Willamette, but aerial photos indicate there was never a drive-in there.
Please remove the S. from the address for the drive-in.
Boxoffice, Aug. 16, 1952: “Owner Willard Gamble has installed two 10,000-watt projector lamps at the Eugene Drive-In. They will produce 40 per cent more light. Gamble recently purchased controlling interest in the airer.”
Boxoffice, Sept. 13, 1952: “The Eugene (Ore.) Drive-In, operated by William Gamble, recently installed a miniature train on the playground”
Opened with Abbott & Costello in “The Noose Hangs High” and Russell Hayden in “Where The North Begins” (unknown if extras added).
Now PetSmart @ 2858 Willamette St, Eugene, OR 97405.
It was closed by 1978 according to Historical Aerials.
Please update.
Interestingly enough, the demolished remains of the Eugene Drive-In were still present in a 1965 aerial. So it wasn’t immediately turned into a shopping mall. Although you can see construction equipment in the aerial, so it was happening by 1965.
Boxoffice, April 2, 1949: “New feature of the Eugene Drive-In, opening for its second season, is a pony ring, with six shetland ponies to provide rides before the shows free of charge for children. The ozoner is located at 2860 South Willamette St., near the intersection of the Lorane Road. L. M. Wirtz is the manager.”
