Hippodrome Theatre

The Hippodrome Theatre was opened on 13th May 1907 as a music hall. In 1913, it began to screen films, and continued as a full-time cinema until 1918, when live shows resumed, although the projection equipment was retained.

In March 1928 it was taken over by the General Theatre Corporation, which became part of the Gaumont British Theatres chain of cinemas in May 1928. By 1933, it was presenting cine-variety, with film only programmes on Sundays when live performances were not allowed.

The Hippodrome Theatre was closed on 10th January 1941 when it was destroyed by German bombs during the blitz on Portsmouth. In 1982, the bomb-site was cleared and an office block named Hippodrome House was built on the site.
