This six-plex was located inside the second level of the Sunnyvale Town Center Mall which was constructed in the late-1970’s on the site of a large swath of old downtown Sunnyvale demolished for the purpose. The theatre opened in December 1980. You arrived at it from the upper level of an adjacent parking garage and after entering the Mall through its nicest entrance, which had nested stucco arches ornamented with Modernistic stained glass panels. Immediately after entering the Mall via this passage, you turned to the right, and you were at the theatre. The entrance was wide, and opened directly to a ticket counter and concession counter. Like all establishments in the mall, the theater entrance was blocked by a pull-down security gate when closed for business. The lobby was finished in dark earth tones, featuring much stained wood. My memories of the auditorium I was in during my one visit to see a movie there are vague, but I think the walls were treated with pleated mustard-colored fabric.
Town Center Mall flourished into the 1980’s, but then began a long decline. In the theater’s last days, AMC relinquished control, and it was renamed IMC 6, standing for India Movie Center 6. It soldiered on for a time, showing film product from India, and then this operation moved to the Towne Theatre in San Jose, where it remains today, in policy.
Save for the Macy’s store, the Town Center Mall, and the theatre with it, was demolished in the past decade. There are plans to include a megaplex in the new construction designed for the former Town Center site, but this part of the project has been put on hold with the slowing of new construction downtown beginning with the 2008 economic crash. At this time, Sunnyvale has no movie theaters standing within its city limits, save for the long-ago repurposed “old” Strand Theatre and “new” Strand (Sunnyvale) Theatre buildings. The nearest places to see movies are the recently-built AMC megaplex added to the older Vallco Mall in Cupertino, the AMC Mercado in Santa Clara, and the Century Shoreline 16 in Mountain View.
