Bragg Theatre

At the time of it’s opening the Bragg Theatre was one of the first suburban theatres that was located outside of downtown Fayetteville and it was an alternative at the time to the other big five downtown movie houses which were the Colony Theatre, Carolina Theatre, Broadway Theatre, Miracle Theatre and the Hamont Theatre.

The Bragg Theatre was Fayetteville’s first-ever suburban cinema that was an 840 seat single screen theatre equipped with the latest CinemaScope projection capable of showing 35mm and 70mm films on one of the biggest panoramic screens in Eastern North Carolina. It was also equipped with eight stereophonic directional speakers with full stereophonic sound along with it’s 36" seats for maximum leg room and comfort.

The grand opening of the Bragg Theatre was on April 5, 1956 with the premiere attraction of Walt Disney’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. It remained a great place for first-run features as well as special events. By the mid-1960’s the Bragg Theatre went to showing “B” movies in order to keep up with the competition and by the early-1970’s was known for showing adult films until it’s closing. It has since been demolished.

I thought this might have been a Ft,Bragg theatre on base. Sure they had a couple.

Does anyone know what year this theatre closed? Clearly after the “early ‘70s,” but hoping for more specifics… Although knowing that it went to showing B and then adult films is helpful… If I find it in a newspaper archive & remember to come back & post, I will, but, til then, if anyone else knows, I would really appreciate it! (This is not a “comment” I suppose, so I hope it is considered on-topic enough — didn’t say any info re: questions in the guidelines…?)

MikeRogers: The theater at Ft. Bragg is called the York Theater (named after Sergeant Alvin C. York) and is listed on CT; also listed is the Pope AFB Theater on what is now Pope Army Airfield. The Bragg Theatre takes its name from Bragg Boulevard. Also, this theater was not in the King’s Plaza shopping center – that theater was the King Theatre.
