The Sundown Drive-In was opened on July 31, 1953 with Dick Haymes in “Cruisin' Down the River”. It was located on a 20 acres lot. One of its most interesting features was the long 525 feet throw from the projection booth, with a narrow projection angle of only 70 degrees. The all-steel screen was 60 feet wide and 40 feet high. The Sundown Drive-In was operated by A.D. Wetzstein and was designed by the architectural firm Associated Design Inc.
It was renamed Star-Lite Outdoor Theatre in 1965.In 1976 to 1980 it was renamed Star Lite Ouutdoor Theatre, it was twinned in 1981 and was renamed Star Lite Outdoor Theatre 1 & 2. Itwas closed on September 1, 1986 andwas demolished.

Were the Starlite and the Sundown drive-in’s one in the same? They are both listed at the same address. From 1961 on the only drive-in listed for Mandan was the Sundown Drive-In.
Opened On July 31, 1953 With “Crusin' Down The River” With No Extras.
The Bismarck Tribune, Jan. 27, 1993: “The Sundown Drive-In Theater had been operated since 1954 by a group of Mandan residents. When new management took over in 1965, the name was changed to the Starlite Drive-In Theater … In 1980, a second screen went up, to make the Starlite a twin theater. On Labor Day 1986, the screens went dark for the final time.”
