AMC Classic Plaza 8

Opened on October 10, 1969 with Peter O'Toole in “The Lion in Winter”. It was operated by the Butterfield Theatres chain, it was originally a single screen theatre. Over time, additional screens were either added or split to create the eight-screen multiplex it is today. It was closed on March 16, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. AMC announced in August 2020 that the closure would be permanent.

You have to admit that Carmike did a nice job in renovating this theater after looking at old photos from the GKC era.

True, but even that GKC facade was an improvement over the original theater’s appearance. Those 70s-era Butterfield-built theaters were little more than cement block bunkers. The interiors were very plain.

AMC closed the AMC Classic Plaza 8 on March 16, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The circuit made the closure permanent that summer becoming one of many theatres closed by a circuit during the pandemic.

Opened by Butterfield Theatres as the Plaza Cinema with one screen on October 10th, 1969 with “The Lion in Winter”. Grand opening ad posted.

Two screens on June 11th, 1975, 3 on September 19th, 1980, 8 on December 18th, 1997 via an expansion out front and more subdivisions, remodeled with expanded lobby and larger screens in July 2003. Grand opening ads and aerial photos added.
