Gothic Theatre

Located in the north Sydney suburb of Willoughby North, on Penhurst Street near the corner of Macmahon Street. Built by the Hoyts Theatres chain and opened in 1938 as the Hoyts Willoughby Theatre. The cinema had seating provided in stalls and circle levels. It had some nice features like a glass enclosed crying room for mothers with babies. Hoyts closed the cinema in 1958, but it was taken over by the owner of the Willoughby Royal Theatre and renamed the Gothic Theatre after the Royal yacht.

It ran as a revival house, switched to foreign films but eventually closed and was converted into a furniture store. The building developed structural faults and was demolished in 1999. In 2012, a building containing a Blockbuster DVD store and Crown on Willoughby stands on the site.

I am still waiting on Trevor Gross to reply to my email to him. Love to collate as much info as possible. I am the original grandson of Bill Smith. I remember very clearly going to Saturday matinee and helping out albeit I was very young

I also remember Trevor Gross very well because he was the general hand that assisted in all things.

The theatre was very large. Sometimes in the matinee, we had to seat patrons on the floor as there was no seating capacity

The theatre had approx 1000 seats which is huge by today’s standards.
