Pavilion Picture Theatre

Opened as the Olympia Skating Rink on 20th August 1909. The building was almost entirely constructed of wood, with only the half-timber façade and a stone tower to the right, being of other materials. By April 1910, the Olympia Skating Rink was screening some films. In December 1911, it was converted into the Pavilion Picture Theatre with a capacity for 980 seats. It was soon enlarged to seat 1,452.

It went under several owners until 1922, when it was purchased by Mid-Yorkshire Entertainments. They operated the Pavilion Picture Theatre until 26th September 1950, when it was destroyed by fire. The final films were Richard Widmark in “Night and the City” and Jean Willes in “The Winner’s Circle”.

This cinema was built of wood and burned down probably early 1950s. It was at the Town End 6-way junction which has been developed and expanded into a large roundabout certainly covering the site of the Pavillion Cinema. This junction is shown on the location map of the ABC cinema.
