This was a Robert L. Lippert Theatre. It is listed as operating from around 1941 and into the 1950’s (perhaps later).
The Lippert organization operated 183 movie theaters, mostly in California, from 1942 to 1992. Mr. Lippert also had a career as a movie producer from 1946-1966, releasing 246 feature-length movies for his company, Lippert Pictures and many of the major studios.
Unfortunately, the Desert Theatre was in an area of decline with many closed businesses. Despite plans to revitalize the 45-square-block downtown area by bringing in nationally known urban designers, positive change came too late and the abandoned cinema burned down on November 14, 2020.

When I arrived in Indio in 1970, the Desert Theater on Fargo Street was in a “Declining” area.
Now presenting “Fine Dining,” whatever that means.

Here is a larger version of the photo drb linked to. The movie on the marquee, George White’s Scandals with Joan Davis and Jack Haley, was released in 1945.
This theater is still there as of January 2015 and still looks the same. Not sure what will ever happen to it since the area is still run down with vacant stores.
