The Empire Picture Theatre was opened on 10th October 1921 with Anna Q. Nilsson in “Why Girls Leave Home”. There was a billiard hall in the basement.
In 1955, the Empire Cinema was the first in Warrington to be equipped with CinemaScope. It was closed on 11th October 1961 with Pat Boone in “All Hands on Deck”. The building was demolished and a Halford’s store was built on the site.

in 1966/67 i worked as the 3rd projectionist at the odeon
butter market street ‘ i remember fred ( always came to work
on his bike ) ‘ and john ’
and you are correct ‘ when i was there they had ’
cinemeccanica projectors ‘ and ( not very reliable )
projectomatic ‘ it was a nice cinema ’ shame all
we have now is the memories '
but i believe ‘ the lower angel ’ the pub next door '
is still serving beer !'
and cinema keeps going '
The only cinema in Warrington to be equipped with four track magnetic sound. A poster advertised this fact.
